Research

Search stopped being a single query.

How multi-turn, natural-language search changes what "ranking well" even means.

How We Think About This

01

The Problem

Content is written for a single keyword query

Most pages answer one opening question and stop, built for a single search box query, not a multi-turn exchange.

02

The Impact

Invisible past the first turn

Pages that don't answer the follow-up questions never surface once an AI assistant's conversation moves past the opening query.

03

The Solution

Structure content to answer the follow-ups too

FAQ-style and comparison content that matches how people actually refine what they're asking.

What conversational search actually is

Traditional search is a single query returning a list of links: "best running shoes." Conversational search is a back-and-forth exchange where a person refines what they want across multiple turns: "best running shoes" → "for flat feet" → "under $150" → "that ship to Canada." Each turn narrows the intent, and the assistant carries context from the previous turns forward rather than treating each query as isolated.

Why this changes what "ranking" means

A page optimized for the single query "running shoes" may never surface in a conversational flow, because the assistant is synthesizing an answer to the fourth, narrowed-down question, not matching a keyword to the first one. Content that answers specific, qualified questions clearly (not just broad topics) is what gets pulled into later turns of a conversation. This is part of why passage-level clarity and specific, well-structured answers matter more in an AI-search world than broad keyword coverage.

What this means practically

Content strategy has to account for the follow-up questions, not just the opening one. A product or service page that only answers "what is this" and not "who is this for," "how much does it cost," or "how does it compare to X" is invisible past the first turn of a conversational search session. This is one of the reasons FAQ-style content and explicit comparison content perform well in AI-mediated search: they match the shape of how people actually refine their questions.
